26 27 28 29

I wanted to bundle the last ones together.
Read about tag clouds, which are an interesting way of posting tags and posted my wordle.
here's my wordle:
http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/1802326/sean
its based on the blog I've been writing, here. I accidentally printed like 4 copies of it.. oops.

Overall, these 29 things have shown many thing I have already seen before.
Some were interesting, but for the most part it felt a bit tedious because I had already been to most of the sites featured, and have played around with them in the past.
I did have some fun messing around with the different web applications available, but overall felt as though the tutorial was outdated, and not maintained because of the broken links and outdated information for users such as myself. If you are new to the web, I could see how this would be a helpful tool to the internet, but unfortunately I am not.

24&25

24. Discover some useful search tools for locating podcasts.
25. Take a look at the titles available on
NetLibrary and learn how to download audiobooks.

I've discovered that most of the 29 things that I'm trying to "discover" I've have already encountered in my travels of the internet. I have used the search tools they provided before, and I have gotten audiobooks online before. This being said, I went on the websites again, learned a bit about each of them. I watched a couple of podcasts, including the interveiw on podacasters:
http://www.podcastalley.com/featured_podcasts.php?feature_id=759
In addition, I opened a netlibrary account, and looked up some books that I enjoy like Slaughterhouse 5. I hope I don't get spammed too much.

23. Discover YouTube and a few sites that allow users to upload and share videos.

23. Discover YouTube and a few sites that allow users to upload and share videos.

I've used youtube before, for more personal stuff, I don't really want to post my link, but I tried to upload a video for this post, and failed because of camera difficulties, but I think it was youtube and not my camera because my camera works for chatroulette.

22. Explore any site from the Web 2.0 awards list, play with it and write a blog post about your findings.

22. Explore any site from the Web 2.0 awards list, play with it and write a blog post about your findings.

I was very interested to see which sites ranked the bast according to this website.
I was happy to see lulu.com got first place as best bookseller, I've used them before to self publish my own work. I checked out oodle.com which is a classifieds website similar to craigslist (which got first place) and found it overly distracting, and thought if they went with something more similar to craigslist they might have got first place. Google go the award for collaborative writing and word processing (go figure) finally I went to http://www.imcooked.com/ to see what they were all about, and found it very intriguing, and will email the link to my girlfriend.

21. Take a look at some online productivity (word processing, spreadsheet) tools.

21. Take a look at some online productivity (word processing, spreadsheet) tools.

In the Learning 2.0 they wanted me to checkout Zoho, but to avoid spam I opted out of trying it out and I am going to blog about another word processing, spreadsheet tools which are available when you sign up for gmail.
When you click on documents once signed into your gmail account, you can access both word processing and spreadsheet, and a calendar, and many other gadgets and doodads (technical term) that are helpful online, I use them almost everyday.

20. Locate a few useful library related blogs and/or news feeds.

20. Locate a few useful library related blogs and/or news feeds.

Checked out
http://www.topix.net/
http://www.syndic8.com/
and came back to http://technorati.com/
checked out some blogs, searched for some interesting articles, and was generally impressed.

19. Learn about RSS feeds and setup your own Bloglines newsreader account.

19. Learn about RSS feeds and setup your own Bloglines newsreader account.

I ended up going through the discovery exercises and signed up for the
Drawn! The Illustration and Cartooning Blog

Its pretty cool.

18. Read a few perspectives on Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the future of libraries and blog your thoughts.

18. Read a few perspectives on Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the future of libraries and blog your thoughts.

I ended up reading, "Away from the "icebergs"" which I found rather interesting. I read the comparisons between libraries and the new web 2.0. It had three key points which it stated, first was the "just in case" which is about libraries having information which may not be provided on the internet, and that libraries are there, just in case. I find this rather the opposite in real life, in most cases, I find it tedious and frustrating to find something in a library, and end up finding what I need online. Second is user education, and this is helping the users to educate themselves and upgrade their educational standards which are applied and make things easier to obtain, and I generally agree with this. Lastly the "come to us" which places the libraries resources available to the web, which in many schools and libraries around the country is already available. This article stresses points of the web which I believe are important, and I feel as though the library system will always be needed, and from my perspective it seems silly to think it will obsolete.

17. Explore Technorati and learn how tags work with blog posts.

17. Explore Technorati and learn how tags work with blog posts.

With Technorati, I viewed the homepage, browsed the articles, blogs, and found it interesting that blogs are tracked using this website.

I ended up searching for my own name and did not get any results worth reporting.

The site is very nice, and I may return in the future.

16. Learn about tagging and discover a Del.icio.us (a social bookmaking site)

16. Learn about tagging and discover a Del.icio.us (a social bookmaking site)

Tagging photos, links, and other bits of information is fairly commonplace for me, I have used delicious in the past, but went to the tutorials for the 29 things, watched the 8 minute video, read some of the hints and tips, and unfortunately found some broken links as well. I bookmarked a couple of links, and they can be viewed here:

15. Roll your own search tool with Rollyo.

15. Roll your own search tool with Rollyo.

Unfortunately the website is down. But it seems very similar to delicious.com

14. Take a look at LibraryThing and catalog some of your favorite books.

14. Take a look at LibraryThing and catalog some of your favorite books.

Librarything is really all about metadata, which I find fascinating. With Librarything
you can add a book to your catalog by just entering the title or connect with other users through your similar reading tastes. Tags and metadata control everything and it works very similarly to most websites online today. Although tempted, I did not signup for an account (did not want to be spammed) but did read up on how to use and tag books, which is an interesting process and an interesting way to catalog and find books online.

13. Play around with an online image generator.

13. Play around with an online image generator.

I honestly had a ton of fun messing around with the image generators that were provided.

I created this motivational poster. I made an obamacon, and some random word generators.

Like this:

7 bizarre ways international spies can kill you suddenly

Fun stuff overall.

12. Make a test call to adjust your computer's settings and if all is well call one of your classmates. We'll be using Skype soon to communicate with group members for our reference assignment. Please also read this article: Skype as Conference Tool (The article is posted under title "Week 5-Skype Things"in the discussion board of the Blackboard.)

I honestly don't know how I would do this without one of my classmates or professor's email account name.

I can connect easily to ichat and have done so in the past.

11. Download and install the software and create your own Skype name. Post your Skype name on the Blackboard Learning 2.0 discussion forum.

11. Download and install the software and create your own Skype name. Post your Skype name on the Blackboard Learning 2.0 discussion forum.

I prefer not to use skype or download it to my computer if it will not be used directly for school activities.

Although my ichat email is seanfriend (@) apple (dot) com.
(so spammers do not spam me)

10. Read up on Skype

10. Read up on Skype

After being sent to the wikipedia article, I learned that
Skype was developed by Estonian developers Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu and Jaan Tallinn, who had also originally developed Kazaa. I also learned skype was bought by ebay, and has had a slew of legal issues. Both Skype and Kazaa I have used in the past, but I no longer download music and if I am video chatting I usually use Apple Chat. My roommate uses Skype more, and I tend to use Apple chat around the holidays.

9. Add an entry to the Learning 2.0 SandBox wiki.

I attempted to use the Sandbox wiki, but was unable to because the page did not exist and I could not create an account.

8. Learn about wikis and discover some innovative ways that libraries are using them.

In this lesson of the "29 things" I had the opportunity to learn more about wikis like wikipedia. I have known about wikis previous to this, but it was interesting to learn more.
In the objective, the teaching states:

"Some of the benefits that make wikis so attractive are:
  • Anyone (registered or unregistered, if unrestricted) can add, edit or delete content.
  • Tracking tools within wikis allow you to easily keep up on what been changed and by whom.
  • Earlier versions of a page can be viewed and reinstated when needed.
  • And users do not need to know HTML in order to apply styles to text or add and edit content. In most cases simple syntax structure is used."
In the Discovery exercise I got the opportunity to look at other wikis from libraries such as The Bull Run Library wiki

It was interesting to see the other wikis available.

7. Create a blog post about anything technology related that interests you this week.

7. Create a blog post about anything technology related that interests you this week.

Technologically, I am extremely interested in Artificial Intelligence. If you click here
you can actually talk for a good time with an artificial intelligence. What amazes me with this technology is that it is created by man, and in a way this computer has its own mind, it thinks and makes decisions based on your own responses and questions. What is more interesting is that these artificial intelligence companies are working with the makers of human "dolls" and are making walking talking thinking artificial people. It wounds like science fiction, but when will we not be able to tell man from machine? Are we creating something we eventually will not able to control? Why would we even try? Seems that the reason is to create something similar to ourselves as a way of showing our intelligence, and promote the human race. Well.. when and how does the race end? And who exactly are we racing?

#6 More Flickr Fun

More Flickr Fun, was in fact kinda fun.
The Flickr Color Pickr lets you find public photos in Flickr that match a specific color, and was interesting being able to see a color wheel and choosing different colors to find different images. Unfortunately, most of the images were not linkable, which was an interesting problem, because I can't post the ones I would like to show. Montagr I was able to create a photo mosaic from photos found on Flickr. By Clicking on individual photos which make up the larger mosaic of photos, it was quite interesting, but once again, without screen capturing I was not able to link to the photo. In this case it was because it was made in Flash.
Next was FD Toys’ Trading Card Maker, which looked cool at first, but I personally enjoy making things myself rather than using premade templates.
Overall it was interesting to find these new tools on the web.

5. Explore Flickr and learn about this popular image hosting site.

5. Explore Flickr and learn about this popular image hosting site.

I took the Flickr tour, and found out how easy it was to Upload, Edit, Organize, Share, Map, Make Stuff, Keep in Touch, and Get updates from family and friends. You can upload using the Flickr Uploader, using iPhoto, Aperture, or Windows XP plugins, from the upload web page, from email and other third-party desktop programs. Editing photos through http://www.picnik.com/ is also super easy, but I prefer Photoshop myself. You can organize photos though flickr and have your own sets depending on your personal preferences. Sharing photos is also easy through flickr, and you can set your preferences to not share, share with friends and family, or share with the world. The maps feature allows to tag photos by location, and could be used to help people know more about a particular place. Next you can make stuff through flickr, take your photos and make prints, posters, cards, photobooks, calendars, and other fun stuff. I personally use zazzle.com for making stuff, but flickr looks like they have the right idea as well. Finally you can keep in touch with family and friends through flickr and add them simliarly to a social networking site, and share photos online.

Flickr is one of many of the photo hosting, sharing, and publishing websites available today. It was nice to learn more about one I am less familiar with.

4. List your blog's location in the Blackboard discussion on this topic and begin your Learning 2.0 journey.

4. List your blog's location in the Blackboard discussion on this topic and begin your Learning 2.0 journey.

In this step of the 29 things, I have already sent the link to my professor, and if you're reading this, you already have it.

3. Set up your own blog & add your first post.

In the 3rd of 29 things, I guess I got ahead of myself..
The 3rd thing is to create and write a response to the 7 1/2 habits.
I created my blog several steps previously, named it, and gave it a template.
In my previous post (2) I already wrote a response to the 7 1/2 habits, so in this blog I will write about creating a blog.

Creating a blog is fairly simple and straight forward, and allows anyone with a computer and a keyboard to post their thoughts to the world. I believe it is a useful for tool for anyone learning or working in any particular field to be able to find others who have similar situations.

#2 Lifelong Learning & L2

In the second of the "29 things" called, "Lifelong Learning & L2" reviewed 7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners. Through a flash presentation, it presented, how to learn, what lifelong learning is, the 7 1/2 habits, and how to create a personal learning plan. The presentation begins with learning to learn, and different examples are shown. Lifelong learning teaches how to think out of the box, and shows examples of how lifelong learners is through experience rather than "normal" ways. Successful lifelong learners are positive, open to new possibilities, and is always learning. The presentation then dives into the 7 1/2 habits, starting at habit one, says to determine your goal first. Habit two is to accept personal responsibility of your own learning, by working toward your goal through personal diligence. Habit three views problems as challenges, which encourages learning by positive thinking, and obstacles become learning opportunities. Habit four is to be confident as a competent learner, and have faith in yourself. Habit five is to create your own learning toolbox, which is the personal experiences, classes, books and other sources which the learner has been apart of. Habit six is use technology to your advantage, as technologies improve, you can be a better lifelong learner by using these technologies. Habit seven is to teach or mentor someone, reinforces learning and gives better personal experience. Habit seven and a half is to play, playing allows for curiosity and helps for better learning. Finally the presentation goes over the learning contract, which is a tool for better learning. Setting your goal, considering the obstacles, looking at your tools and resources, set a path to your goal, check-in and sign the goal contract as a way for lifelong learning.
I found the presentation very informative and interesting, I will try the goal contract in the future as I continue to lifelong learn.

#1 Discovery has never been so much fun

The introduction to learning Web 2.0, simply put engages me, the user into learning about the web is changing to a more open interface which anyone can learn and modify themselves. The podcast provides a precise view of what the program will be about, and how I will "play" in order to make new discoveries.
